- Size: 30 mm wide × 40 mm tall (this tool exports 354×472 px at 300 dpi).
- Plain, light background — white, pale blue, or grey.
- Front-facing, business attire, neutral expression, taken within 3 months.
- Face centred, with a little space above your head.
For the full checklist and tips on taking a good photo with your phone, see rirekisho photo rules.
How to use it
- Choose a clear, front-facing photo.
- Drag the image and use the zoom slider until your head and shoulders sit in the frame.
- Keep “white background” on for a clean fill behind transparent edges.
- Download the PNG and add it to your resume or print it.
Taking a photo that works
- Stand facing a plain white or light-grey wall, near a window in daylight, so your face is evenly lit.
- Ask someone to take the photo with the rear camera at eye level, about one to one and a half metres away. Close-up selfies distort the face.
- Wear plain, dark, collared clothing, keep hair off your face, and look straight at the camera with a neutral expression.
- Upload the photo here, zoom and drag so your head and shoulders fill the frame, and download the 30×40 mm image.
- Add it to your resume in the editor, or print it at 100% scale and cut it out.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Japanese resume photo?
The standard size is 30×40 mm (3×4 cm), portrait. Most rirekisho templates, including the JIS and MHLW layouts, have a box this size.
Can I take the photo with my phone?
Yes, as long as it is straight-on, sharp, evenly lit, and against a plain background. Use the rear camera with a timer or a helper instead of an arm’s-length selfie.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The cropping happens in your browser and the image never leaves your device.
How recent should the photo be?
Taken within the last three months is the common expectation, and it should look like you do now.
Should I smile?
A calm, neutral expression or a slight closed-mouth smile is standard. Avoid a big smile, sunglasses, hats, or busy patterns.
Add it to your resume
