満年齢 · Age

—

On a rirekisho, write your age as of the date you submit it — set the “as of” date to your interview or submission date to get it exactly right.

What is 満年齢?

満年齢 (man-nenrei) is your age counted in completed years — the everyday meaning of “age” in most of the world, and what a Japanese resume asks for. It increases on your birthday, so the figure depends on the date you are measuring against.

Why the “as of” date matters

A rirekisho shows your age as of a particular date — usually the day you submit it or the interview date. If your birthday falls between today and that date, your age changes. Writing an age that does not match the submission date is a small but common error that tidy employers notice, so set the “as of” field to the date you will actually hand in the form.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Enter your date of birth.
  2. Set the “as of” date to the day you will submit the resume, or the interview date if you will hand it over in person.
  3. Read your 満年齢 and write it in the 満○歳 box next to your date of birth.
  4. If you print the resume now but submit it after your birthday, update both the date at the top and the age.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 満年齢 and 数え年?

数え年 is a traditional count in which you are one year old at birth and everyone gains a year on New Year’s Day. It survives mainly for festivals and some ceremonies. Resumes and all official paperwork use 満年齢, your age in completed years.

Which date should my age be calculated against?

Against the date written at the top of the rirekisho (the 現在 or “as of” date). That date should be the day you submit the resume, so the age and the date always agree.

My birthday is next week. Which age do I write?

The age you will be on the date written on the form. If you submit after your birthday, use the new age and change the date to match.

Does the age depend on whether I use 令和 or Western years?

No. Your age is the same number either way. Only the way you write your date of birth changes, and it should follow the same calendar system as every other date on the resume.

Do both the JIS and MHLW forms ask for my age?

Yes. Both have an age box beside the date of birth, so fill it in on either template.
